For a while there, it was kind of a shaky proposition, the possibility that this blog would continue.

Slowly but surely, you 20 ‘Followers’ that we have have made your way into this corner of The Internet, and our hearts. Well, we appreciate your patience while some restructuring occurred. A lot of things have been holding us back, and there still might be plenty to get in our way in the upcoming future.

However, compared to months ago, it looks like we stand a half chance of making it through. The goal is still to be able to start getting some things out in analog releases, but for now, digital content will pop up from time-to-time in the form of pictures and demo tracks.

We added Disqus commenting on the posts a while back, so you’re 100% free to comment on anything here, and you can always Ask us about nearly anything (though do let us know in a separate message if you want your question and our answer to stay private or not, otherwise it will be entirely up to our discretion!).

In the meantime, Fearless Leader is bursting with emotion and a renewed sense of purpose, and you’ll sometimes see those things addressed more specifically (when they don’t involve the rest of us) over on his own blog (which we hope you’ll check out from time-to-time).

Thanks for being great, and for giving us the benefit of the doubt. Even through a few of you being around, it seems like we’re the Popular Kids, only without the expectation to appear at Prom (¡it’s all about the Afterprom, obviously!).

Drunk Virago - The Only Brother (rough tracks demo version)

Early cut of the first session. Quick-and-dirty audio balancing was done, no mastering or effects. Already corrected a couple of problems. The MySpace for that band (see link) has this quick rough mix up already, as well.

GPOYW-April 30th, 2010: Fearless Leader, in the siuIU (Southern Illinois University Improvisation Unit), playing instruments created by Chris Scamehorn.

The last public show of the siuIU as an octet (that I know of… there’s not exactly a lot of people who’ll be filling in the slots for the coming Autumn) of the Spring 2010 season. The premise involved them not really using any instruments whatsoever of theirs (FL, at most, brought percussion brushes and a bass bow for interacting with what was there): Everything we were going to use was there.

Chris Scamehorn’s M.F.A. exhibition revolved around his sculpting abilities and tendencies for making “functional art” that is meant to be interacted with. So, the setting of the room evoked an undersea aesthetic, with all of the sculptures providing musical qualities. With the exception of Matt, who is himself studying sculpture at present, there wasn’t a single member who had used the specific instruments (or versions of somewhat familiar instruments) before. Amidst this, they created a group improvisation that lasted the starting 21 minutes of the exhibition’s opening.

Here, he’s breaking away from the percussion “groove” (half of the group’s members are primarily percussionists, with the rest of the siuIU having various levels of informal or formal percussion training) to engage one of the ocarina-like instruments on the same initial sandpile that were available (they later spread out more over the room’s area).
